Lake Lewisville Fishing Report-February 2019

Lake Lewisville Hybrid Striper Fishing Report

The giant schools of bait or shad have returned to the deep waters at Lake Lewisville and more white bass have returned with them. I have had the best luck fishing around the river channels and deep water flats. Fishing smaller flukes or crappie sized baits have worked the best. I like to use a tandem rig with quarter ounce or three eights ounce jig heads. The white bass are suspended along with most of the bait. Some days they seem to be finicky and others willing to eat their fill. The fishing has improved compared to a month ago. We are catching a few hybrid stripers, but they are hit or miss as of today. With stability in the weather comes stability in the fishing. In my opinion, the reoccurring fronts as of late have diminished a solid pattern. White bass and hybrid striper fishing should continue to improve as we head into spring. Crappie are fair on bridges, and the creek fishing should really turn on here shortly. With all the rain we’ve had this winter, I expect the creeks to be packed with crappie and white bass. This is the time of year where we usually catch blue and channel catfish suspended right along with the white bass and hybrid striper. They are following the forage just like the other fish

Lake Ray Roberts Fishing Report-February 2019

Lake Ray Roberts White Bass Fishing Report

Lake Ray Roberts continues to impress me. It has provided some solid fishing for my clients and I for the past several months. The white bass are on a similar pattern when compared to Lake Lewisville, but seem to have a better attitude. We have been catching more females than males, which means better quality fish. I’m using the same fishing set up here as I am on Lake Lewisville. There is little boat traffic and the lake and surrounding scenery is gorgeous. These white bass are hungry most days and catching limits have been common. The limit for white bass in Texas is twenty-five per person, and they have to be over ten inches long. The average white bass on Lake Ray Roberts has been twelve to thirteen inches long. A majority of these fish have eggs already. This lake is just twenty miles north of Lake Lewisville but provides us with another option to target white bass.

Lake Tawakoni Fishing Report-February 2019

Lake Tawakoni Striper Fishing Report

Lake Tawakoni is usually fishing strong this time of year, but the striped bass, hybrid stripers, and white bass have been slow as of late. They seem to be feeding every four or five days, and if you happen to be there on that day then it can be great. Dead sticking is the technique commonly used to catch these fish. It is simply lowering your bait in front of the fish and holding it still. Wait for the thump and set the hook. It could be a two pound white bass or a twelve pound striped bass.  The bite is usually very light, and sometimes a weightless feeling signifies a bite as well. I have not been catfishing here recently, but I know several guides who are catching trophy blues daily. Cut gizzard shad is the bait of choice, but some people use cut carp or buffalo. Drifting deep water flats and even fishing as shallow as two foot of water has produced catfish. As spring approaches, the shallow water bite will be more productive. This is a great fishery and when it decides to show off, it will not disappoint.

Lake Texoma Fishing Report-February 2019

Lake Texoma Striper Fishing Report

Lake Texoma has been pretty stellar lately for striped bass. We have been catching them up to fifteen pounds. I started taking clients here due to the inactivity of hybrid stripers on Lake Lewisville and striped bass on Lake Tawakoni as of late. Striped bass have been hanging around the river channel, deep water flats, and on structure. When referring to structure, I am referring to points, humps, and ledges. The birds have been a big help. Seagulls and loons working bait and fish is a good sign, and they usually have active fish underneath them. The striped bass limit is different here as compared to all the other lakes in Texas. Each person can have ten fish with two of those fish being over twenty inches. Most of the fish my clients and I have been catching have been “overs” or over twenty inches. If you’re looking for big fish, this is the lake I would suggest right now. If you dress the part on these colder days, the fishing is well worth it. People ask when the best time to catch a big striped bass is, and in my opinion it is in the winter months. They are feeding up for the spawn and some will start to have eggs soon. Dead sticking flukes and drifting Alabama rigs has been putting big fish in the boat. For more information follow Lake Lewisville Fishing Guide-Wes Campbell.
